In my kindergarten notebook: "I am a writer."

For me, that’s it.

While I am also a husband, father, surfer, musician, traveler, and filmmaker, being a writer, storyteller, and interpreter of signs is the drumbeat to it all. I am a writer.

In my career, I've been blessed to captain some of my favorite magazines (Surfing Magazine, Bali Belly, The Surfers Journal), to contribute to publications like Wall Street Journal, Islands, Whalebone, Maxim, Sierra, and LA Times, and to create surf/travel movies around the world. One time I visited Indonesia for ten years, where I started my own production company for clients like GoPro, Patagonia, Red Bull, and Sports Illustrated – we installed headrests into local taxis and created branded content around Southeast East Asia’s most inspiring restaurants, hotels and travel experiences.

Returning to the US, I spent three years growing a fledgling start-up with a bold mission into a nationally recognized brand changing how people think about technology (check out Gabb.com). We ran contests, podcasts, influencers, and weekly video content. And always, it was the writing that guided every decision.

If writing is a solitary act, playing my role on a team is what I love about it. The moment I put down the pen, I pick up a camera, dive into production, take over the interviews, and dig into the editing, color correction, and sound design. Until the work is done. Nothing gives me greater joy than being part of a winning team. (Except, perhaps, telling that team’s story.)
